Understanding RCC Corrosion and Its Mechanism
Reinforced Cement Concrete (RCC) corrosion occurs when steel reinforcement bars (rebars) in concrete degrade due to exposure to moisture, oxygen, and chloride ions. This triggers chemical reactions that weaken the concrete, starting when carbonation or chloride contamination reduces the alkalinity of the concrete, damaging the protective oxide layer on the steel, making it vulnerable to rust.
As the rusted steel expands, it creates internal pressure, leading to cracks and spalling of the concrete cover. These cracks allow moisture and aggressive ions to accelerate the corrosion process. Factors such as improper curing, high water-to-cement ratios, and exposure to marine or high salinity environments further intensify corrosion, significantly reducing the lifespan and safety of RCC structures.
